What does The Contextualizer do?

It scans the visible text of web pages you view and inserts satirical modifier words immediately before or after mentions of specific public figures. The insertions are cosmetic, appear only in your own browser, and do not alter the underlying page or its source.

I installed it but nothing’s happening.

Grant it permission to run on websites. On Safari, click the extension and choose “Always Allow on Every Website”—until you do, it intentionally changes nothing. On Chrome and Firefox, make sure it’s enabled and allowed to run on the sites you’re viewing. Full steps are in the install guide below.

It’s not working on a particular site.

By design, it stays inactive on a small list of sites where altering text could cause problems, and it targets news and article pages rather than every page on the web. If a news page you’d expect it to work on isn’t showing modifiers, reload the page once.

Does it slow down my browsing?

Not meaningfully. It works locally and quickly, and makes a single small download (a list of sites to skip) when it starts.

Does it collect my data?

No—it collects nothing, stores nothing, and runs no tracking or analytics. See the Privacy Policy for the full details.

How do I turn it off or remove it?

Disable or remove it anytime from your browser’s extensions settings, like any other extension.

Install guide

Chrome & Edge

1. Buy The Contextualizer and download the extension .zip.
2. Unzip it—you’ll get a folder. Keep this folder somewhere permanent (e.g. Documents, not Downloads). Chrome runs the extension from this folder, so moving or deleting it later removes the extension.
3. Go to chrome://extensions and turn on Developer mode (top-right).
4. Click Load unpacked and select the unzipped folder.
5. Open a news site—the modifiers appear. Please enjoy The Contextualizer.

Chrome may show a “Disable developer-mode extensions” reminder on startup—normal for any extension installed outside the Web Store. Just close it; the extension keeps working.

Firefox (desktop & Android)

1. Open the extension’s page on Firefox Add-ons and click Add to Firefox.
2. Approve the permissions prompt.
3. Open a news site—the modifiers appear. Please enjoy The Contextualizer.

Safari (macOS)

1. Buy and download The Contextualizer from the Mac App Store.
2. Open Safari → Settings (⌘,) → Extensions and turn it on.
3. Grant website access: click the extension’s icon and choose “Always Allow on Every Website”.
4. Open a news site—done. The extension will not change any page until you complete the access step.

Refunds

The Contextualizer is a digital product. If it doesn’t work for you or you’re unhappy, email omfg@thecontextualizer.org within 14 days and we’ll help troubleshoot or arrange a refund. Firefox is the free version; Mac App Store purchases are refunded through Apple; Gumroad purchases through Gumroad.
